5/20/08: Conveyance Modeling Workshop 2
The CALFED Science Program will host the second of two workshops May 20 on conveyance modeling in the Delta. The workshop will explore approaches to linking hydrodynamic and biological models and assess the potential outcomes to advise the Blue Ribbon Task Force on ways to achieve planning objectives.
05/08/08: Report from First Conveyance Modeling Workshop Available
Experts from a CALFED Science Program Modeling workshop issued a summary report to CALFED Lead Scientist Mike Healey assessing the capability of existing hydrodynamic models to address Delta Vision Task Force needs. The experts concluded that existing Delta hydrodynamic models, when carefully and skillfully applied, can provide reliable information to the Task Force on the response of Delta hydrodynamics to conveyance changes.
05/06/08: Protection for Longfin Smelt
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced its determination that sufficient information exists to initiate a status review of the longfin smelt for protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Today's determination is the first step toward listing of the longfin smelt or Spirinchus thaleichthys, a five-inch-long fish that lives in San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, which has suffered a steep decline in abundancesince 2001 to just 13 fish recorded in a survey last year.
05/19/08: Independent Science Board Meeting
The CALFED Independent Science Board (ISB) will meet Monday, May 19th to discuss the future of the ISB and overall science needs for the Delta. The meeting will be webcast.

- Water Quality
-
Approximately two-thirds of all Californians - an estimated 23 million people - obtain at least some of their water from the Delta. This means the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is the single largest source of California's water. CALFED's Water Quality Program Objective is to invest in projects that improve the state's water quality from source to tap.
-
- Water Supply
-
CALFED's Water Supply Reliability Program Objective is comprised of five critical elements: Conveyance, Storage, Environmental Water Account, Water Use Efficiency and Water Transfer. Together and in partnership with local and regional agencies, this program allows for the increase of water supplies and more efficient and flexible use of water resources.
-
- Ecosystem Restoration
-
Ecosystem Restoration and Watershed program elements combine to improve the ecological health of the Bay-Delta watershed. Through CALFED implementing agencies, ERP works to restore and protect habitats, ecosystem functions and native species and the Watershed Program provides funding, coordinates and offers technical support for local watershed activities.
-
- Levee Integrity
-
Resources of CALFED's Levee System Integrity Program Objective protect water supplies needed for ecosystems, cities, industry and farms by reducing the threat of levee failures that would lead to seawater intrusion. The program works through continuous monitoring and improvement of the Delta's 1,100 miles of levees.
